Remedies for Dangerous Dog in the Neighborhood

A dangerous dog in any neighborhood is a difficult and, often times, extremely dangerous situation. A number of potential remedies are available including:

Provide the dog owner with notice and/or a warning regarding their dangerous dog. You may consider including a copy of your states dog bite law as an illustration of the liability exposure that this dog creates for the owner.

Pursue a small claims court action if the dog has damaged property or inflicted a very minor injury.
File a complaint with the appropriate authorities (e.g. police, homeowners association, landlord).
Report to animal control officials.
Consider consulting with an attorney.

This notice should also be sent to the resident of the property, with a copy to the local animal control department, a copy to the injured person, and a copy to the owner of the property if different from the resident.
