Remedies for Dangerous Dog in the Neighborhood

Provide the dog owner with notice and/or a warning regarding their dangerous dog. You may consider including a copy of your states dog bite law as an illustration of the liability exposure that this dog creates for the owner.

  • Pursue a small claims court action if the dog has damaged property or inflicted a very minor injury.
  • File a complaint with the appropriate authorities (e.g. police, homeowners association, landlord).
  • Report to animal control officials.
  • Consider consulting with an attorney.

This notice should also be sent to the resident of the property, with a copy to the local animal control department, a copy to the injured person, and a copy to the owner of the property if different from the resident.
